About The Center

The Center for Relational Therapy was born out of the desire to create a space for the weirdos, outcasts, misfits, and nonconformists that is owned and operated by fellow weirdos, outcasts, misfits, and nonconformists. Grounded in a deep commitment to creating an inclusive and affirming practice, we offer therapeutic services to folks who fall outside of the margins.

Whether you are queer, kinky, non-monogamous, or really any identity that falls out of the bullshit “norms” of society, we offer this space of healing to you. We are the therapists who subscribe to the notion that you cannot heal the self without recognizing the impacts of our broken systems.

Our primary focus is on helping our clients heal their relationships with the external (family, partners, lovers, friends) and, most importantly, with the internal (that’s right, your relationship with yourself!). We became the therapists we wished we could have had growing up, and we would be honored to be that therapist for you.

We are committed to creating and upholding an anti-oppression, anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ affirming, sex-worker, non-monogamy, and kink-affirming space that is informed by Feminist, Queer, Liberation and Intersectional theories.

Our values inform our practice, and we are deeply dedicated to maintaining spaces that not only welcome but affirm and honor ALL identities, especially those who are the most marginalized.

Meet the founder, Dr. Elyssa Helfer

I’m Dr. Elyssa Helfer, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist. I am an Adjunct Professor, Author, and Research Associate, but I am most proud to be a fierce advocate for sexual rights and freedoms. I believe that we exist in a world that benefits from our pain and profits from our self-hatred, and my greatest goal is to not only fight back by helping empower my clients but work to change the systems and structures that keep us hurting in the first place. Let’s fuck some shit up.
