So, you’ve decided to start therapy…

Real talk, therapy is hard.

But you have already taken the first step by finding your way to this website.

I know what it is like to begin this process. It can feel daunting, scary, and maybe even a little intimidating. I have been there too and I know that so much of what matters is connecting with someone who you can grow to trust. My job is to support you and create a space where we can work together to make the changes you are starting to feel ready to make. You will not be alone on this journey. I am here to guide you each step of the way, working collaboratively beside you. From day one, we are in this together.

Meet Dr. Elyssa

Hello! I’m Dr. Elyssa Helfer, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and currently reside in LA with my rescue dog Butters (see below for his introduction). I am an Adjunct Professor, Writer, and Research Associate who pretty much thinks I have the most amazing job in the world. I believe that we exist in a world that benefits from our pain and my goal is to not only fight back by helping empower my clients but work to change the systems and structures that we live in. I take an anti-oppression lens and am kink, nonmonogamy, sex-work, and LGBTQIA-affirming. My therapeutic style is grounded in authenticity, humor, cursing, and compassion. Let’s chat and see if we are a good fit!

Meet Butters

Butters is a 2 year old rescue pup who lives with Elyssa. He loves to stick out his tongue, go on long walks, and snuggle. He can often be found sleeping in his bed during therapy sessions and occassionally barking at dogs he hears outside. He is rated 10/10 on the good dog scale.
